#NYC #Foodie Experiences -Peter Luger #Steakhouse #PeterLuger

NYC steakhouse
So, you're headed to New York for #BlogHer 12 or just to see the amazing Big Apple. You want to hit up all the great places to eat and well, I'm going to share some with you. Have you heard of Peter Lugers? No? Are you serious? It's only one of the best steakhouses in the US. It's even mentioned in the New York Times #1 Best Selling Book, 1000 Places to See Before You Die. They celebrated 125 years of tradition this year. When I say tradition, I mean tradition...they haven't changed their methods since they opened in 1887.  This is a must go to place if you proclaim yourself to be a foodie. Hell, even if you aren't a foodie, go try it out! It's been rated New York's #1 Steak House for 28 years in a row!

They serve only the best USDA PRIME meat available. They have a video on YouTube that shows their rigid selection process. The family members visit wholesale markets on a daily basis and out of the best cuts, they are ever so selective and choose only the best of the best. Their steaks are grilled the way they are. There is no additional seasoning because they believe that fresh, quality beef will taste amazing as is...and they're right, it tastes amazing! To the point that I'm drooling as I write this post.
New York City restaurant
They have 2 locations, 1 in Brooklyn (178 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11211, Phone: 718-387-7400) and 1 in Long Island (255 Northern Blvd, Great Neck, NY 11021, Phone: 516-487-8800). THey're open Monday to Thursday from 11:45AM-9:45PM, Friday and Saturday from 11:45AM to 10:45PM, and Sunday from 12:45PM to 9:45PM. By the way, the end times I have written are their last seating times. I have only been to the one in Brooklyn and they are hard to book for a time. They recommend booking a month in advance. However, I have a tip for you. If you go before 4pm, you will NOT need a reservation. In fact, you'll be seated fairly promptly and be out and on your way in no time. The ambience is a rustic one. I found myself enjoying the old building nestled in Williamsburg. The area was quite peaceful and we easily found street parking. Inside, it's a cozy homely feel with the old wooden tables and overall decor. The only thing I didn't like was that the tables are so close together.  They are a large restaurant with two sides and even additional floors. I've never been upstairs before though. The waiters are friendly and it's easy to settle in.

With regards to costs, well, steak is obviously not that cheap but if you're looking to save a bit of money, they do offer daily specials and Peter Luger burgers. I have seen a lot of people try those out during lunch hour and personally would've loved to try one myself if the SO wasn't such a meat lover. They start you off with this huge basket of bread and I am a carb addict so I couldn't stop eating their bread. It was yummy! I would recommend you trying their slab of bacon. These are no ordinary slabs. They're quite thick and can be shared. They're a bit salty for me but the SO loved them. Steaks can be ordered to share and you should really try to have some because they are just juicy perfection. We usually get the steaks for 3 and have enough to bring home. The creamed spinach is amazing! However, the price in the menu seems to be per person as the bill always seems to reflect double the cost for the SO and me. For fun, try their special Peter Luger's steak sauce. To me, it just tastes like seafood sauce mixed with BBQ sauce. Try it and tell me what you think. Of note, is the dessert...they serve it with homemade "schlag" (whipped cream). It's quite nice and well, don't worry about costs there. Just enjoy your dessert. ;) I love my cheesecake and well, their's is pretty good. If you want a look at the full menu and approximate costs, scroll down to the bottom of the post.
Onion Rings
Now, you've enjoyed your meal, you want to pay. Their site says they accepts debit cards, checks with ID, and the Peter Luger Credit card. However, the invisible rule of thumb in this restaurant seems to be that they are CASH only. You look around and no one is paying with cards, everyone pays with cash. So, yes, although they say they'll take debit, we felt incredibly awkward trying to do so and ended up paying cash instead.

Here's a glimpse of the menu. Please note that some prices may have changed since I got these prices and even when you're there, it seems the prices are a bit higher than listed on the menu.
