Summer is here! The sweltering heat, the long days of sunlight, along with school being out. What are you and your kids up to this summer? I have a wonderful suggestion that will not only help with summer reading but keep kids and teens of all ages interested in adventure and learning. A nice change from the electronics we all know and love. Yes, I admit it. However, I also believe it to be equally important to spend quality time with our kids.

I present to you the perfect summer reading and adventure book collection:
Great summer reads for kids
Explorer Academy by author Trudi Trueit is a fantastic series that we have just picked up in our household. We love to read it out loud to our son since he's not quite at the age of reading himself. We've gotten quite into the books! Who wouldn't love adventure, mystery and brain teasers?!

The series is a part of National Geographic Kids Book's thus far includes:
-Book 1: The Nebula Secret
This book introduces you to the characters and Explorer Academy and centers around 12-year-old Crus Coronado as he joins an elite school for explorers with 23 other talented kids from around the world. However, it's more complicated than getting into an elite school, as it appears someone is out to get Cruz. The mystery deepens as he tries to delve deeper into his family's nebulous past with the organization.

-Book 2: The Falcon's Feather
The continuation of Cruz and his friends' adventure as they embark on their first mission!

-Explorer Academy Code-Breaking Activity Adventure
Your task, should you chose to accept it... cracking codes, finding clues and becoming an Explorer Academy student yourself. This book is full of fun codes for the family to work on together.

The Explorer Academy series makes reading fun and an adventure. You get the peril and danger along with the mystery and tech that has you thinking,
how awesome would it be if that really existed? and
how brilliant are these kids
?!
Best of all, there's learning points and random facts slipped in the books that will have the kids learning before they realize it. It appeals to a broad age range, however is geared to the 8-12 year range. The early teens who are more likely to read on their own and younger kids who'll have fun reading with their parents or older siblings. Personally, I love a good hardcover book, however if you're looking for the paperback copies, here it is: Book 1: The Nebula Secret. For fans of the series, Book 3: The Double Helix will be out on Sep 3rd, 2019.

Want more challenges?
National Geographic also has these awesome books for you and your kids to keep your mind active this summer.

Brain Games: Mighty Book of Mind Benders ($12.99, ages 8-12)
Can I say that it was challenging for me to resist this book. I feel like I'm testing myself in "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" Likewise, this book is full of puzzles, challenges, neuroscience and fun that not only challenges but enlightens young minds. It is based on the television show, Brain Games from National Geographic. This book turns on the competitive streak in our family.

Prefer to use your hands instead?
Get off those phones and tablets this summer with:
Make This!: Building, Thing and Tinkering Projects for the Amazing Maker in You ($16.99, ages 8-12)
I love this creative way for families to bond and spend time together while creating and designing projects...maybe getting a little bit dirty. Build a kaleidoscope. Create a musical instrument. Take on new projects.

Let the fun begin!
