It’s pretty amazing how much Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue is based on real aerial firefighting. The storyline, life lessons, and comedy has been great. My fascination, however, lies in the research done for the film. We spoke with the Director of Creative Development Paul Gerard and Co-writer Jeff Howard to find out more.

The last time I visited DisneyToon Studios, Planes: Fire and Rescue was already in production. However, that didn’t even begin to show the amount of work that goes into the making of these animated films. Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue was actually 5 years in the making. This kind of work requires passion and commitment to be able to dedicate yourselves to the project for so long as we heard from Bobs Gannaway (Director) and Ferrell Barron (Producer). Bobs and Ferrell gave us exclusive insights to the making of Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue, available to fly home with you November 4.

Do you know any firefighters? They do an amazing amount of work that goes unnoticed and unreccognized. Did you know just in California itself, there are 5600 fires a year? In the US, there are 50 000 a year! That means day in and out, firefighters, aerial and ground, are working to protect civilians that they don't even know. We only ever hear about the big fires. In September, we had the opportunity to visit the Van Nuys Tanker Base in preparation for National Fire Prevention Week and to visit one of the sites where Disney did their research for Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue.

The life of a Disney story artist is definitely more complicated than it appears. That's what I learnt when I met with Dan Abraham (head of story/art) and Art Hernandez (lead storyboard artist) for Disney Planes. It all started over 2 years ago when they finally received the story that Klay wanted it to be at.

I love my animated movies just as much as any other movie. I can't say I've ever really considered animation just for kids. Perhaps, I'm just a big kid at heart.

Did you know I've always wanted to learn how to fly a plane? Now after running into a few coworkers and family members who have or are doing it, it makes me want to do it even more! Think Dusty will give me a lesson or two if I pass his coloring and connect the dots quizzes? Teehee! Alright, it'd be nice but these activity sheets are pretty awesome just on their own too.

I just received the cutest Cars toys in the mail and I couldn't help but think of the upcoming Planes, from Disney! We're huge fans of Cars in this household and we can't wait until Planes comes out. The endearing story of a cropduster who would love to be a high-flying racer but just so happens to have a fear of heights.
